The Times: Former Sky chief admits manipulating drug rules

Malcolm Wood: «When the TUE and Wiggins/Team Sky affair was first discussed on ToL I was roundly abused by naive see-no-evil posters such as Richard Pethybridge (so far keeping his head down) for casting unjustified slurs at Sirs Brad and Dave when it was obvious to any objective neutral that shenanigins were taking place. If not direct hidden illegal drug abuse, then most certainly a bending of clear rules whilst simultaneously claiming the high ground of openness and supposedly completely opposed to the routine drug taking which has been at the centre of cycling for decades.

Those voices are now completely absent or strangely muted today, but it is still disappointing to note defenders of the faith, rather like those hiding money in offshore tax havens, still claiming here the defence that «no rules (Laws!)» have been broken. You’ll never be able to prove matters when Tablet computers conveniently go missing on which all relevant records are kept and nowhere else etc etc.

Let’s be clear. You administer a corticosteroid, the drug of «last resort» in treating acute asthma issues, ONLY when there is a genuine and critical medical need. Otherwise it’s cheating, pure and simple because there are significant performance gains. No ifs, buts, or wherefores, full stop.

It’s obvious Wiggins was not so disposed because you don’t get out of bed and win (three times!) the most critical races of your life if you are that ill. This is an exposure of hypocritical team leadership and a compliant rider, both of whom have hugely benefited from those Tour de France and Giro d’Italia victories.

Disgusting and so, so disappointing for anyone still genuinely trying to ride clean within their genuine ability.»
